Protective Styles Ruined My Self Esteem

Anyone familiar with curly to "nappy" hair has had experience with protective styles. This includes cornrows, dreadlocks, and in my case, box braidsI've had a very long and excruciating hair journey to get to where I currently am.

In December 2017, I made the bold decision to "big chop." For those who don't know what this is, it's when you cut off all your damaged hair and continue with only your new growth. After having box braids for almost three months, I cut my hair to approximately 2 inches. I don't regret it at alldespite how horrible it looked in the beginning.

From that point, I've had box braids several more times. Although I love them to the bottom of my heart, they've only made me hate my natural hair. I've become so used to having long, luscious braids that I forgot to appreciate my curls.

It always takes a while for my confidence to bounce back when I take out my braids. I have to salvage my appearance by wearing big hoop earrings or dramatic eyeshadow. Over time, I kind of just learn to accept it. Then I get braids again and the cycle repeats.

My experiences with box braids have been incredible, don't get me wrong. What I've learned from my experiences has taught me to appreciate my natural hair for what it is. I have a great support system of friends and my boyfriend who constantly remind me that they love me with and without my braids.

I want my fellow black beauties to consider the same. I've wasted so much time and money trying to be beautiful when it comes naturally all along. Don't forget who you are; you slay with and without kanekalon!
